```Blue Man Group Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall Theatre reviews
Meh
I'm probably writing this review mostly for folks who are pretty familiar with a Blue Man Group show, not as much for the person who's never seen them. If you are in the latter category, read no further, just go see 'em, you'll love it!! Others read on...
I've seen BMG 9-10 times over the last few decades, going way back to their first Vegas installation at Luxor, several live tours, etc. and I'm sorry to say this was my least favorite. I'll start by saying, though I've obviously seen a number of different tours and shows, I've skipped others I knew were 'repeats', but the reason I went to this one specifically was because it was promoted as a "new" show. Onward!
First off, this was probably the weakest blue man team I've seen. I'm not trying to be mean, but I've got much to compare to. During the performance, they did a handful of their tried and true routines, and I have no qualms with old bits being part of the new show, but they weren't well executed. Without picking it apart piece by piece, let's just say there were a lot of dirty marshmallows involved in this show and overall, the performers didn't personify the Blue Man character as well as (all) the others I've seen.
That said, as far as the new show goes, I really liked the new set, and there were a few new routines and some new instruments that were sweet. Hence, the 3 stars vs. something less... My biggest beef with the show was an apparently intentional shift toward more audience interaction and less music. It obviously wouldn't be BMG without some of that, but for me anyway, it was way out of balance. Almost half of the show (time spent) were audience interaction/participation skits, much of which was either really awkward (I've seen other top notch blue man teams turn that awkwardness into something really "good"!) or it was just plain cheezy (which speak more to the skit writing itself.) Some of the young kids in the audience loved this stuff, but myself and other adults I talked with afterward were just treading water waiting for those bits to wrap up.
On a side note, the band is much smaller, but solid as usual. Unfortunately, they also spent a ton of time treading water (same riffs for 7-10 minutes) while the men in blue did their audience participation thing.
Capsule Summary: Your young kids will probably love this show more than you do. If you're a BMG veteran (or "worse", a musician) a good bit of what you love about a BMG show has probably changed to something you don't love as much. I'm not prepared to say I'll never go see BMG again, but I'm definitely going to let this new show work itself out for a good couple of years before I'll go back.
